Ransomware Readiness Checklist for Law Firms

A practical checklist to reduce ransomware risk, prevent wire fraud, and protect attorney-client privilege—without slowing attorneys down.

Published: 2026-02-26

Why law firms get hit

Law firms are high-value targets: confidential documents, settlement details, wire instructions, and fast-moving deadlines. Attackers know even a short outage can force tough decisions.

The checklist (quick wins first)

  1. MFA everywhere (email, VPN/remote access, admin portals, cloud apps).
  2. Separate admin accounts + least privilege. No daily work on admin creds.
  3. Lock down email: phishing filters, safe links/attachments, and mailbox monitoring.
  4. Endpoint hardening: EDR + weekly patching for OS/browsers/PDF tools.
  5. Secure document access: limit shared links, require sign-in, enforce retention.
  6. Wire fraud controls: out-of-band verification + internal approvals.
  7. Backups that restore: immutable + test restores, not “set it and forget it.”
  8. Incident plan: who decides, what gets shut down, what restores first.
